Congratulations on getting the internship you have been waiting for. You have worked so hard to get to where you are, and you cannot afford to waste this opportunity. Even if this is not the ideal internship you dreamed of, I believe that you can still learn some lessons.
Here are a few tips that can help you maximize your internship experience:
#1 Arrive early
Wake up, get dressed and get to work. This shows that you are ready to take on the tasks of the day, and you get a lot more done.
You might not realize how much importance is put on punctuality, but a lot of employers really appreciate and strongly encourage the punctuality of their employees. Arriving early also gives you time to catch up on unfinished business of the previous day and maybe make friends with other early coworkers that you might not see as often.
#2 Take notes
I know, you may have the brain capacity to remember every last detail of the last 100 years, but please take notes. Some things are too important to be missed. Trust me, once you are multitasking, you are surely going to forget something. Take notes during work orientation, during meetings, even while perusing a document. There are a lot of things that you will need to remember, so do everyone a favour and note them down. Writing things down also helps your memory, giving you the ability to remember things for much longer.
#3 Ask Questions
Just do exactly as the heading says. Be inquisitive about your work and how everything you do operates in the grand scheme of things. Please do not act like you know it all. Most especially, try not to “fake it till you make it”, at least not until you know what differentiates the ‘fake’ from the ‘original’.
Ask questions about how to complete your tasks because even some of the basic things you do know might be done differently at your workplace. Feed on the intelligence of others, many of them are extremely happy to share their knowledge.
I hope you are ready to make the most of your internship with these few tips. I have no doubt that you will shine at your workplace.
Keep pushing and good luck.
